With a Beginner’s Guide to Blogging, I thought about how when you want to start a side hustle, a new career, a new business, or a new passive income source, one thing that coaches and the internet will tell you is to start a blog. But how do you go about starting a blog with no knowledge or experience? I put together a webinar titled “A Beginner’s Guide to Blogging.” For many of us in Nigeria, this is a big challenge. When I started blogging, I just went on and on making mistakes and doing trial-and-error. However, I have decided to share and help others navigate their way through this.

After the webinar, I put together the slides, which you can download here.

Here is what you will learn from the webinar ‘A Beginner’s Guide To Blogging’

These blogging guide will answer the following questions.

What is blogging all about? What is a blog?

Blogging started in 1994 and has grown from being personal diaries to educational, information content, lifestyle and many more. Blogs became powerful platforms for sharing knowledge, tutorials, and in-depth explanations on various subjects, from academic disciplines to practical skills. As the internet grew, bloggers began to specialise, creating highly focused content for specific audiences. This “niching down” allowed bloggers to establish themselves as authorities in their chosen fields and attract dedicated followers.

The rise of platforms like YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and podcasts further expanded the definition of “blogging.” Many bloggers now integrate video (vlogging), audio (podcasting), and visual content into their strategies, promoting their long-form blog posts through these channels and reaching wider audiences.

What is the difference between a blog and a website?

Many people do not know that there are huge differences between a blog and a website. How about you? Well, you can find out now by watching a replay of the webinar.

Key Differences Highlighted in a Webinar:

A webinar on this topic would likely delve into:

  1. Content Freshness and Chronology: The most obvious difference. Blogs thrive on new, time-sensitive content, while many website pages are static.
  2. Interactivity & Engagement: Blogs are built for comments, social sharing, and community building. While websites can have contact forms, direct interaction on static pages is less common.
  3. Purpose & Goal: A website’s goal might be sales or information dissemination. A blog’s goal is often to attract visitors through content, build authority, and then potentially lead them to other parts of the website.
  4. SEO Implications: Blogs are fantastic for SEO because search engines love fresh, relevant content. Regularly updated blog posts provide more opportunities for keywords and backlinks than static pages.
  5. Technical Setup: While both use web hosting and domains, the underlying platforms and content management systems (CMS) might be configured differently to optimise for one or the other (e.g., WordPress is excellent for blogs, but can also power complex websites).
  6. Maintenance & Strategy: Maintaining a blog requires a consistent content strategy. A static website might need less frequent updates once launched.
