NYSC PRE CAMP JITTERS

NYSC: MY PRE CAMP JITTERS

LET’S START THIS STORY FROM HERE…

My NYSC pre camp experience started way back before university. Crazy right? Back when I was little and young, I always admired anyone I saw putting on NYSC uniform, the entirety of the khaki (even in part). Left to me, every year would another set of teachers that we would call corpers. They will take us subjects in school; some would later become private lesson teachers. It was fun seeing them acting new, the town strange to them, talking about how new everything was to them, their university experience and how they are now serving et cetera et cetera. We too, we’d listen to social studies, government and history lessons on how NYSC was created by Gowon, Civil War and the likes…

Meanwhile, I was just waiting to enter university, graduate and go and serve Nigeria somewhere.

If someone had seen my thoughts and told me better.

NYSC REGISTRATION

NYSC: MY PRE CAMP JITTERS

“The portal would be open today by midnight”, so they told us on the day registration was to commence. Thank God, I’d register early and pick the bests states. As it turned out, it was not so. Yes the portal was open for registration by midnight but it didn’t start till 12pm same day. To all those who had done vigils at cyber cafes waiting to register early, well, it is part of experience. Or to hear that your institution cannot begin registration because the senate list is still on the way to be handed over and uploaded. All is well still.

READ: NYSC POST CAMP STRUGGLES

I had my own share as I was not able to register until 2 a.m. the next day. Slept outside my house to be able to register, I had to take and retake passports as they kept on being rejected by the site till I found the right one. For many people, it was the tale of staying up all night and just getting 2 slots to pick just 2 states. However, a lot kept refreshing the page and refreshing till they got the four slots complete.

All the rush for registration and soon you see that no states are available because they are filled or that 2 weeks extra has been added for registration to continue.

NYSC POSTING

Convocation was a week ago and now, we are waiting for NYSC posting. As long as I don’t get posted to Yobe State, I don’t mind… that’s one, nobody wants to go far. Meanwhile, blessed be the schools that get posted months after convocation for they shall receive rest and those who decide to wait for months or a year before being mobilized or schools that have their convocation after the whole camp. If only I saw the wisdom in this then. Get to give yourself time to rest, plan and prepare, not having to deal with all the expenses at once. But, as you wish and as fits your plans. As it is best for you.

When it comes to this posting thing, in some people’s mind they are praying not to go far. Everybody knows somebody and have plans for where they would like to be posted to. Imagine staying up all night not to get the desired state you wish for or even picking the desired state only to end up far away from there.

Then, there are the why did you pick this state people? But seriously why does anybody pick the states they do? Why do people rush Lagos and Abuja? Some say jobs and opportunities. For me, I picked Oyo State because I hear living is okay and affordable. Why live costly in Abuja and Lagos and still go through stress. Let the people that can stand it face it. For those going on adventure, please do well to enjoy yourselves. I will go around for tourism later on.

MINIMUM WAGE AND ALLAWEE…

So, in April when I heard that minimum wage has been increased from N19, 800 to N30, 000 or so, joy filled my heart. Woman had plans. I didn’t even bother to listen to analysts converting from dollar to naira, calculation human living and its costs. Serving corps members said we should forget it that they have not even been paid, we kept on saying it would start from us. I have already accepted N19, 800, there is no problem. I’m prepared for both.

NYSC CAMP KIT…

NYSC: MY PRE CAMP JITTERS

So, now everyone is a business owner. Need camp kit? Don’t look too far; your next door neighbor is selling. Don’t even bother to look, somebody around you has it.

I’m inexperienced about the whole thing. I really can’t wait to go and learn a lot.
